What is Autism?

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. Signs of autism usually appear as early as 12 months– 3 years of age. There are no specific causes of autism. Research studies suggest that it may develop from a combination of genetic, environmental and/or non-genetic influences.

Every child with autism has unique strengths and challenges and so a treatment plan is devised according to their individual needs. A combination of the following treatments are usually suggested after a complete screening and evaluation by a developmental paediatrician, psychologist or psychiatrist:

– Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)

– Occupational therapy (OT)

– Speech therapy

– Verbal behavior therapy (VBT)

– Social Skills group training

– Small-group school readiness program

– Special Education services
